What does it mean when a member has been ordered to receive a reprimand?
Reprimands are opportunities for the Discipline Committee to tell a member its concerns about the member’s misconduct. They are not opportunities for a member to re-argue their case. The Discipline Committee may deliver reprimands orally or in writing, depending on the circumstances. The fact that a member has received a reprimand will be noted on the public register of the Ontario College of Teachers. Where a member is to receive an oral reprimand, they should contact the Tribunals’ Office to schedule it. Reprimands are often delivered immediately after the hearing, but in some cases they may be delivered at a later date (often within a time period specified by the Discipline Committee).
Members should know that there may be serious consequences for not attending to receive a reprimand. Failing to appear for a reprimand may be considered an act of professional misconduct that could give rise to a new discipline hearing.
