Will I have to pass the Mathematics Proficiency Test?
Ontario Applicants
Ontario applicants who complete their application on or after March 31, 2020 must pass a Mathematics Proficiency Test, whether or not the application was started before that date. A complete application includes the receipt of all required documentation and fees by the College. Please see the Registration Guides to learn what documents and fees are required to complete your application for certification with the College.
Ontario applicants are individuals enrolled in, or who have completed a program of professional education in Ontario. Applicants who are entitled to receive a certificate based upon satisfying requirements to become teachers of Native Languages are exempt from test requirements. There are no equivalencies to the Mathematics Proficiency Test.
Ontario applicants who become certified between March 31, 2020 – August 31, 2021
An Ontario applicant who is required to pass the Mathematics Proficiency Test can become certified with a condition to pass the test by August 31, 2021. If they do not pass the test by August 31, 2021, their certificate will expire and there will be no extensions. They will be required to pass the test and meet all other applicable certification requirements before re-certification.
Ontario applicants who become certified on or after September 1, 2021
In order for an Ontario applicant who is required to pass the Mathematics Proficiency Test to become certified on or after September 1, 2021, they are required to pass the test before they can become certified. They cannot be certified with a condition to pass the test.
Internationally Educated Teacher (IET) Applicants
IET applicants who complete their application for a certificate of qualification and registration on or after March 31, 2020, whether or not the application was started before that date, are required to pass a Mathematics Proficiency Test within two years of being granted their initial certification by the College. Otherwise, their certificate will expire and they will be ineligible to teach in Ontario until they pass the test and meet all other applicable certification requirements. A complete application includes the receipt of all required documentation and fees by the College. IET applicants are individuals who completed a program of professional education outside of Canada, which led to certification to teach in that jurisdiction. IET applicants across all subjects and grades must pass the test. There are no equivalencies or exemptions.
Labour Mobility Applicants
Applicants who hold a teaching certificate from a Canadian province or territory outside Ontario are covered under the Ontario Labour Mobility Act and are not required to write the Mathematics Proficiency Test in order to become certified.
Current College Members
Current College members do not have to write the Mathematics Proficiency Test. However, if a member wishes to take the test, they may do so. Further information about the administration of the test will be provided as soon as it is available.

- What is happening with the new option for Ontario applicants to get certified with a condition to pass the test?The College has worked closely with the government to allow an Ontario applicant who is required to pass the Mathematics Proficiency Test to become certified with a condition to pass the test by August 31, 2021. If they do not pass the test by August 31, 2021, their certificate will expire and there will be no extensions. They will be required to pass the test and meet all other applicable certification requirements before re-certification. - What happens after August 31, 2021? In order for an Ontario applicant who is required to pass the test to become certified on or after September 1, 2021, they are required to pass the test before they can become certified and cannot be certified with a condition to pass the test.
- What if I’ve already successfully completed the Mathematics Proficiency Test? Ontario applicants who have successfully passed the field test are already considered to have met this certification requirement and will not have this condition applied.
- What if I am in a multi-session program and apply for a transitional certificate? Ontario applicants who apply for a transitional certificate may be certified with a condition to pass the Math Proficiency Test by August 31, 2021. If they do not pass the test by August 31, 2021, their certificate will expire and there will be no extensions. They will be required to pass the test and meet all other applicable certification requirements before re-certification.
